What to Expect
Yuanjiajie plateau sits at around 1,000 metres — the high section of Wulingyuan Scenic Area where the most dramatic pillar formations cluster. The Southern Sky Column (南天一柱) here was officially renamed “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” after the 2010 film explicitly modelled floating mountains on it.
The plateau loop combines viewpoint walks, forest paths, and the iconic “First Bridge Under Heaven” — a natural sandstone bridge connecting two pillars 357 metres above the valley floor.
The Route
Access Yuanjiajie by cable car from the South Gate area (included in admission) or by climbing from Tianzishan via a connecting trail. Most visitors ascend by cable car and walk the plateau loop.
From the upper cable car station, turn right toward Avatar Hallelujah Mountain Viewpoint (5-minute walk). The Southern Sky Column is directly ahead. This is the most photographed spot in Wulingyuan — arrive early or late afternoon.
Continue counter-clockwise on the marked loop. After 1 km, First Bridge Under Heaven viewpoint appears on the right — a narrow sandstone arch bridging two pillar tops.
The northern section of the loop passes through denser forest before reaching the No. 1 natural bridge viewpoint and the Tianmen Mountain distant view platform.
Complete the loop back to the cable car station: total 5–5.5 km, 2.5–3 hours at a comfortable pace.
Difficulty & Fitness
Moderate — primarily due to length and some uneven stone paths, not significant elevation gain. The plateau itself is relatively flat; the main exertion is if you ascend on foot rather than by cable car.
Getting to the Trailhead
Take the eco-bus from South Gate to Yuanjiajie cable car station. Alternatively, use the Bailong Elevator (Hundred Dragons Sky Lift) from the valley floor — this is the world’s tallest outdoor elevator and an experience in itself.
Practical Tips
- Arrive at the viewpoints by 8:30–9:00am to beat the tour groups who arrive from 10am.
- Morning mist is common spring–autumn. This is often beautiful rather than obstructive — low cloud between pillars is the iconic look.
- The loop is well-signed in English. You cannot get lost.
- Do not attempt to walk from the valley floor unless you are comfortable with 800+ metres of ascent.
