What to Expect
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is 67 km from Wulingyuan and operates as a completely separate attraction with separate tickets. It is a different visual experience — a narrow limestone gorge with waterfalls, pools, and jungle — rather than the iconic sandstone pillar landscape.
The glass-bottomed bridge opened in 2016 and was immediately viral. At 430 metres long and 300 metres above the canyon floor, it held multiple world records on opening. The bridge is the attraction for most international visitors; the canyon gorge walk is the means of reaching it.
The Route
From the entrance, a paved canyon path descends into the gorge. The walk passes waterfalls and several pools over 2.5 km before reaching the bridge approach.
The bridge crossing itself takes 10–15 minutes. Shoe covers are required (provided). The transparent floor is genuinely alarming — take your time.
After crossing, a second canyon section continues to the exit shuttle bus stop. The full one-way route is 5 km; return by shuttle.
Getting There
67 km from central Zhangjiajie city (1.5 hours by road). No public bus direct. Options: private tour, DiDi (pre-book), or join a day tour from Wulingyuan or the city (most guesthouses arrange these for ¥80–150 including transport + ticket).
Practical Tips
- The bridge closes in high winds and heavy rain — check the official WeChat account or ask your guesthouse the morning of your visit.
- The ¥178 Canyon + Bridge ticket is the best value for most visitors. Canyon only (¥60) doesn’t include bridge access.
- Allow a full day: travel time from Wulingyuan (1.5hr each way) + 3–4 hours in the canyon.
- The zipline across the canyon (not included in any ticket) is ¥200–300 and must be booked separately at the site.
