Getting to Zhangjiajie: Flights, Trains & Buses

How to actually get to Zhangjiajie — from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and beyond. Which option is fastest, cheapest, and least painful.

May 15, 2025

Zhangjiajie is in northwestern Hunan Province. It’s not on the main high-speed rail spine, which means getting here takes a bit more planning than most Chinese cities. But it’s very doable — millions of people do it every year.

By Air (Fastest)

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (ZJJ) has direct flights from:

  • Beijing (PEK/PKX) — ~2.5 hours
  • Shanghai (PVG/SHA) — ~2 hours
  • Chengdu (CTU) — ~1.5 hours
  • Guangzhou (CAN) — ~1.5 hours
  • Shenzhen (SZX) — ~1.5 hours

Fares vary wildly. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for reasonable prices. During Golden Week (October 1–7), prices spike significantly — book a month out.

From the airport to city/Wulingyuan:

  • Taxi to Zhangjiajie city center: ~¥50, 25 minutes
  • Taxi to Wulingyuan town (park area): ~¥120–150, 50 minutes
  • Airport shuttle bus: ¥15, but slower and less convenient

By High-Speed Train (From Nearby Cities)

There’s no direct high-speed rail to Zhangjiajie yet, but you can get close:

Via Changde: Shanghai/Beijing → Changde by HSR, then 2-hour bus or slow train to Zhangjiajie.

Via Huaihua: Many western routes pass through Huaihua. From there, regular trains run to Zhangjiajie (~2.5 hrs).

Direct slow trains: From Changsha (Zhangjiajie’s provincial capital) — 5–6 hours but very affordable (¥60–80 hard seat). A good overnight option.

By Bus

Long-distance buses from Changsha to Zhangjiajie run regularly — about 5 hours and ¥100. Comfortable enough for a daytime trip. Buses depart from Changsha’s Xinbandao Bus Terminal.

Getting Around Zhangjiajie

Once you’re here:

  • Between city and Wulingyuan: Taxi (¥100–130), public bus (¥15, takes 1.5 hrs), or arrange with your hotel.
  • Within Wulingyuan: Park scenic buses are included in your ticket. They connect all zones every 10–15 min.
  • Tianmen Mountain: Located near the city center — easy taxi from your hotel.
  • Glass Bridge: 45 min from city by taxi. No public bus goes directly — budget ¥80–100 each way, or negotiate a round-trip with the driver.

Practical Notes

  • WeChat Pay and Alipay are essential. Many vendors don’t accept cash or foreign cards. Set up one before you arrive.
  • International cards: Some hotels and the main park ticket offices accept UnionPay or Visa, but don’t rely on it.
  • SIM card: Buy a Chinese SIM at the airport on arrival if you need data. VPN required for Google Maps, etc.
